From Water Analysis to the Right Treatment

Water quality problems cannot be treated properly until the cause is understood. Private water supplies can contain minerals, sediment, organic material and microbiological contamination, often with several issues present at the same time.

JN Environmental uses water analysis, source conditions and site requirements to determine the correct treatment approach rather than relying on a standard filter package.

Depending on the results, treatment may include pH correction, iron and manganese removal, sediment filtration, activated carbon, softening, specialist media, UV disinfection or reverse osmosis.

Private Water Supply Treatment

Treatment designed around your water analysis, source and system requirements.

Private water supplies from boreholes, springs and wells can contain naturally occurring minerals, sediment, colour, bacteria and other contaminants that affect water quality, appearance and the performance of plumbing and equipment.

The correct treatment depends on the raw water analysis, available flow and pressure, the source itself and the demand placed on the system. JN Environmental designs treatment systems around those conditions rather than relying on a standard off-the-shelf package.

Our engineers regularly design and service systems for iron and manganese removal, pH correction, turbidity reduction, colour and tannin removal, hardness, taste and odour issues, UV disinfection and other private water supply problems.

Iron • Manganese • Low pH • Turbidity • Colour • Tannins • Hardness • Taste & Odour • Bacteria

If you do not have a recent water analysis, we can arrange sampling and laboratory testing before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

Common Private Water Supply Contaminants & Water Quality Problems

Private water supplies can be affected by naturally occurring minerals, sediment, organic matter and microbiological contamination. The type and concentration of these contaminants can vary significantly between boreholes, springs, wells and other private water sources.

Some problems are immediately visible, such as staining, cloudy water or scale. Others, including bacteria, nitrate and arsenic, may be present even when the water looks completely clear.

The correct treatment depends on the water analysis, source conditions, available flow and pressure, and the way the supply is used. Below are some of the most common water quality problems found in private water supplies, together with their typical symptoms and treatment methods.

Select a problem below to learn more about the causes, drinking-water standards and treatment options.

Iron (Fe)

DWI limit: 200 µg/L

Iron is naturally present in many groundwater sources and is particularly common in borehole supplies. It can be completely clear when first drawn from the source, then oxidise when exposed to air and produce orange or brown discolouration.

Common signs: Orange staining around sinks, toilets and showers, brown water, metallic taste and deposits within pipework or treatment equipment.

Why it occurs: Groundwater can dissolve iron from surrounding rocks and soils as it moves through the ground. Once exposed to oxygen, dissolved iron can oxidise and become visible.

Typical treatment: Oxidation followed by correctly sized filtration. The exact treatment depends on the iron concentration, pH, flow rate and the form of iron present.

IRON IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES
Iron contamination in a private water supply causing orange staining and brown discolouration
Manganese contamination in a private water supply causing black staining and dark deposits

Manganese (Mn)

DWI limit: 50 µg/L

Manganese is a naturally occurring metal found in many groundwater and borehole supplies. It can remain dissolved in clear water before oxidising and forming dark brown or black deposits.

Common signs: Black staining around sinks, toilets and showers, dark deposits in tanks or pipework, discoloured water and fouling of treatment equipment.

Why it occurs: Groundwater can dissolve manganese from surrounding rocks and soils. Once the water chemistry changes or oxygen is introduced, the manganese can oxidise and become visible.

Typical treatment: Oxidation and filtration, often with careful pH control. The exact process depends on manganese concentration, pH, flow rate and overall water chemistry.

MANGANESE IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES

Acidity / Low pH

DWI limit: pH 6.5-9.5

Low pH means the water is acidic and can make a private water supply corrosive. This is common in some borehole, spring and upland water sources, particularly where the surrounding geology provides little natural buffering.

Common signs: Blue/green staining, metallic taste, pinhole leaks, corroded copper pipework and premature failure of fittings, cylinders or other equipment.

Why it occurs: Water with low alkalinity can absorb carbon dioxide and remain acidic as it passes through soil and rock before reaching the source.

Typical treatment: pH correction using high-grade pH correction media or controlled chemical dosing, depending on the water chemistry and required flow rate.

IRON IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES
Corroded copper pipe caused by acidic low pH water in a private water supply
Cloudy private water supply showing high turbidity and suspended sediment particles

Turbidity

DWI limit: 4 NTU

Turbidity is the cloudiness or haziness caused by suspended particles such as silt, clay, fine sediment and organic material. It is common in spring, borehole and surface-influenced private water supplies.

Common signs: Cloudy water, visible particles, sediment collecting in tanks or filters and rapid blockage of downstream cartridges or treatment equipment.

Why it occurs: Turbidity can increase after heavy rainfall, source disturbance, pumping changes or where fine material is drawn into the supply from the surrounding ground.

Typical treatment: Sediment filtration, multimedia filtration or clarification, depending on particle size, turbidity level and required flow rate.

TURBIDITY IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES

Hardness (Ca / Mg)

DWI limit: No statutory maximum drinking-water limit

Hardness is mainly caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals. It is common in groundwater supplies passing through limestone, chalk and other mineral-rich geology.

Common signs: Limescale on taps and showerheads, scale inside kettles and cylinders, reduced heating efficiency and deposits forming on equipment and pipework.

Why it occurs: Water dissolves calcium and magnesium from surrounding rock as it moves underground, increasing the mineral content before entering the supply.

Typical treatment: Ion-exchange water softening where required, selected according to hardness level, flow rate and site demand.

HARD WATER IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES
Hard water limescale deposits on a chrome tap caused by calcium and magnesium in a private water supply
Microbiological contamination in a private water supply including E coli, Enterococci, coliform bacteria and Clostridium perfringens

Bacteria

DWI limit: Zero

Microbiological contamination is one of the most important risks associated with private water supplies. Unlike iron or turbidity, bacteria are usually invisible, so clear water can still fail microbiological testing. Private supply regulations require water to be free from microorganisms at levels that could present a danger to health.

Common organisms and indicators include:

  • E. coli — a key indicator of recent faecal contamination. The standard is 0 per 100 mL.
  • Enterococci — another strong indicator of faecal contamination, also with a standard of 0 per 100 mL.
  • Coliform bacteria / faecal coliforms — used as indicators of contamination, poor source protection or problems within storage and distribution systems.
  • Clostridium perfringens — including spores, particularly relevant where supplies are influenced by surface water.
  • TVC / colony counts — typically measured at 22°C and sometimes 37°C; changes or unusually high counts can indicate deterioration in water quality or problems within the system.

Common causes: Surface-water ingress, poorly sealed boreholes, contaminated spring chambers, livestock, drainage, damaged tanks, stagnant pipework or inadequate disinfection.

Typical treatment: Source protection, suitable pre-filtration and correctly sized UV disinfection, with chlorination or other disinfection methods used where appropriate.

IRON IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES

Nitrate (NO₃⁻)

DWI limit: 50 mg/L

Nitrate is a dissolved contaminant commonly associated with agricultural land, fertilisers, animal waste and drainage. It can also occur naturally in groundwater. Because nitrate is colourless, odourless and tasteless, a private water supply can contain elevated levels even when the water appears completely normal.

Common signs: Usually none. Elevated nitrate is typically identified only through laboratory analysis, which is why routine testing is important for boreholes, wells and other rural private water supplies.

Why it occurs: Nitrate can leach through soil into groundwater from fertilisers, slurry, septic systems and other sources of nitrogen. Shallow or poorly protected sources are generally more vulnerable.

Why it matters: High nitrate is a health-based water quality concern, particularly for infants, and should not be treated as simply an aesthetic issue.

Typical treatment: Ion exchange or membrane treatment such as reverse osmosis, selected according to the nitrate concentration, water chemistry and flow requirement.

NITRATE IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES
Nitrate testing of a private water supply using laboratory water analysis equipment
Arsenic contamination risk in a private water supply requiring laboratory testing and specialist treatment

Arsenic (As)

DWI limit: 10 µg/L

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can enter groundwater through certain rocks, soils and mineral deposits. It is particularly important because contaminated water can look, smell and taste completely normal even when arsenic levels are elevated.

Common signs: Usually none. Arsenic cannot be identified reliably by appearance, taste or odour and is normally detected through laboratory water analysis.

Why it occurs: Groundwater can dissolve arsenic-bearing minerals as it passes through certain geological formations. Concentrations can vary significantly between boreholes, even within the same general area.

Why it matters: Arsenic is a health-based contaminant, so elevated levels need proper investigation and treatment rather than simply improving appearance or taste.

Typical treatment: Specialist adsorption media, ion exchange or reverse osmosis, depending on arsenic concentration, water chemistry and required flow.

ARSENIC IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES

Sediment

DWI limit: 4 NTU turbidity

Sediment is made up of suspended or settled particles such as sand, silt, clay, rust and fine mineral material. It is common in boreholes, springs and other private water supplies where the source can be affected by ground disturbance or seasonal changes.

Common signs: Visible particles in the water, cloudy appearance, sediment collecting in tanks, blocked cartridges and rapid fouling of downstream treatment equipment.

Why it occurs: Sediment can enter through the source itself, damaged boreholes, spring chambers, disturbed ground, ageing pipework or changes in pumping conditions.

Why it matters: High sediment levels can increase turbidity, reduce water clarity and interfere with UV disinfection and other treatment processes.

Typical treatment: Sediment cartridges, multimedia filtration or other staged filtration depending on particle size, loading and required flow rate.

SEDIMENT IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES
Sediment and suspended particles in a private water supply causing cloudy water and filter blockage
Brown and tea coloured private water supply caused by dissolved organic matter and minerals

Colour

DWI limit: 20 mg/L Pt/Co

Colour in private water supplies can be caused by dissolved organic matter, iron, manganese, peat and other naturally occurring materials. It is particularly common in spring and surface-influenced supplies.

Common signs: Yellow, brown or tea-coloured water, staining, discoloured storage tanks and complaints about appearance even where the water is otherwise clear.

Why it occurs: Natural organic material can leach into water from soil, vegetation and peat, while dissolved metals such as iron and manganese can also contribute to colour.

Why it matters: Colour is primarily an aesthetic issue, but high colour can indicate underlying water-quality problems and can also interfere with UV disinfection.

Typical treatment: Activated carbon, specialist resin, oxidation or other filtration depending on the cause of the colour.

COLOUR IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES

Tannins

DWI limit: No specific standalone DWI limit

Tannins are naturally occurring organic compounds released from peat, soil, leaves and decaying vegetation. They are common in spring, shallow groundwater and surface-influenced private water supplies.

Common signs: Yellow, amber or tea-coloured water, staining and persistent discolouration even when there is little visible sediment.

Why it occurs: Water passing through peat-rich soil and decaying vegetation can dissolve organic compounds before entering the source.

Why it matters: Tannins are mainly an aesthetic and treatment issue, but they can make water appear unacceptable and can interfere with some filtration and disinfection processes.

Typical treatment: Specialist tannin-removal resin, activated carbon or other organic-removal media depending on the water chemistry.

TANNINS IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES
Tannin contamination in a private water supply causing amber and tea coloured water
Organic matter in a private water supply causing brown discolouration and natural debris

Organic Matter

DWI limit: No single standalone DWI limit

Organic matter is naturally occurring material from soil, peat, vegetation and decaying biological material. It can affect spring, shallow groundwater and surface-influenced private water supplies.

Common signs: Yellow or brown water, earthy or musty taste and odour, staining, discolouration and increased loading on filters or treatment media.

Why it occurs: Water passing through soil, peat and vegetation can dissolve or carry natural organic material into the source before it reaches the treatment system.

Why it matters: Organic matter can affect appearance, taste and odour, increase treatment demand and interfere with filtration and disinfection processes.

Typical treatment: Activated carbon, specialist organic-removal media or staged filtration depending on the type and concentration present.

ORGANIC MATTER IN PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES

Taste & Odour

DWI limit: No single standalone DWI limit

Taste and odour problems can be caused by natural organic matter, hydrogen sulphide, iron, manganese, stagnant water, treatment media or contamination within the supply.

Common signs: Metallic, earthy, musty, sulphurous or unpleasant tastes and smells, even where the water appears visually clear.

Why it occurs: Private water supplies can pick up dissolved gases, minerals and organic compounds from the source, storage tanks, pipework or treatment system.

Why it matters: Changes in taste or odour can make the water unpleasant to use and may indicate an underlying water-quality or treatment problem that needs investigation.

Typical treatment: Activated carbon, aeration, oxidation or other treatment depending on the specific cause identified.
