Private Water Filtration Systems
Design & Installation
Complete Borehole & Spring Water Supply Systems
JN Environmental designs and installs complete private water supply systems for homes, farms, estates and commercial sites across England, Wales and southern Scotland.
From filtration and pumps through to storage, controls and UV treatment, our engineers design the complete system around your water quality, available flow, pressure and site demand.
Complete Private Water Filtration Systems
JN Environmental designs complete filtration systems around the actual conditions of the private water supply, including the raw water analysis, source yield, available flow and pressure, storage requirements and site demand.
Rather than treating individual filters as separate components, we design the treatment, pumping, storage, controls and UV equipment to work together as one complete system.
Water Analysis • Filtration Design • Borehole & Spring Treatment • Pumps & Pressure • Water Storage • Controls • UV Disinfection
Borehole Water Filtration

Treatment systems designed around borehole water quality, source yield, flow, pressure and site demand.
Spring Water Filtration

Filtration systems designed around spring water quality, seasonal flow, storage requirements and site demand.
Other Water Sources

Filtration and treatment for lakes, wells, surface-fed supplies, mixed sources and other non-mains water systems.
Bespoke Filtration Systems Designed Around Your Water
Every private water supply is different. The correct private water filtration system depends on the raw water quality, source yield, available flow and pressure, storage requirements and how much water the property or site actually needs.
JN Environmental designs borehole water filtration systems and spring water filtration systems around those conditions rather than relying on a standard off-the-shelf package. Filtration, pumping, storage, controls and UV disinfection are selected to work together as one complete system.
If you do not have a recent water analysis, we can arrange sampling and laboratory testing before the treatment system is designed.

Common Private Water Supply Problems
Private water supplies can contain naturally occurring minerals, sediment, organic matter and microbiological contamination. Below are some of the most common water quality problems we see in borehole, spring and other private water sources.
Iron (Fe)
Iron (Fe)
DWI limit: 200 µg/L
Iron is commonly found in groundwater and can cause orange/brown staining, metallic taste and discolouration. It can also foul pipework, filters and other water treatment equipment.
Typical treatment: Oxidation and filtration.
Manganese (Mn)
Manganese (Mn)
DWI limit: 50 µg/L
Manganese occurs naturally in groundwater and can cause black staining, dark deposits and discolouration. It can also build up inside pipework, tanks and treatment equipment.
Typical treatment: Oxidation, pH control and filtration.
Acidity (Low pH)
Acidity / Low pH
DWI range: 6.5–9.5 pH
Low pH means the water is acidic and may become corrosive to copper pipework, fittings and equipment. It can also increase the risk of metals dissolving into the water.
Typical treatment:
High-grade pH correction media.
Turbidity
Turbidity
DWI limit: 4 NTU
Turbidity is cloudiness caused by suspended sediment, minerals or fine particles within the water. High turbidity can also reduce the effectiveness of downstream UV disinfection.
Typical treatment:
Sediment or multimedia filtration.
Hardness (Ca / Mg)
Hardness (Ca / Mg)
No statutory maximum limit
Hardness is mainly caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. It can create limescale on taps, heating elements, pipework and other water-using equipment.
Typical treatment:
Ion-exchange water softening.
Arsenic (As)
Arsenic (As)
DWI limit:
10 µg/L
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can enter groundwater through certain rocks and mineral deposits. It may be present even when the water appears completely clear.
Typical treatment:
Specialist media or reverse osmosis.
Nitrates
(NO₃)
Nitrate (NO₃)
DWI limit: 50 mg/L
Nitrate can occur naturally but is often associated with agriculture & fertilisers It is especially relevant to boreholes, wells and shallow groundwater supplies.
Typical treatment:
Ion exchange or reverse osmosis.
Bacteria
Bacteria
DWI limit: Zero
Bacteria can enter private water supplies through surface water, drainage, livestock activity or poorly protected sources. Waterborne bacteria can cause severe illness.
Typical treatment:
Filtration & UV disinfection, chemical dosing.
Sediment
Sediment
DWI Limit:
4NTU
Sediment can include sand, silt, clay and other fine particles entering the water from the source. It can cause cloudiness, block filters and interfere with downstream treatment equipment.
Typical treatment:
Sediment or multimedia filtration.
Colour
Colour
DWI limit: 20 mg/L Pt-Co
Colour may be caused by iron, manganese or naturally occurring organic material in the source water. It can affect appearance, taste and the performance of UV disinfection contributing to bacteria failures.
Typical treatment:
Carbon, resin or specialist filtration.
Tannins
Tannins
No single standalone limit
Tannins are naturally occurring organic compounds released from vegetation, peat and decaying plant material. They can give spring or surface water a yellow or tea-coloured appearance.
Typical treatment:
Tannin resin or activated carbon.
Organic Matter
Organic Matter
No single standalone limit
Organic matter can enter water from soil, vegetation, peat and decaying natural material around the source. It can affect colour, taste, odour and the performance of treatment systems.
Typical treatment:
Carbon or specialist organic removal.
What We Design & Install
From water treatment and filtration through to pumps, pressure, storage and UV disinfection, JN Environmental designs complete private water systems around the individual source, water analysis and site requirements.
Water Treatment & Filtration
Treatment systems for iron, manganese, low pH, turbidity, colour, tannins, hardness and other private water supply issues, designed around the actual water analysis and site requirements.
Pumps & Pressure Systems
Borehole pumps, booster pumps, pressure vessels and variable-speed systems designed to provide the required flow, pressure and reliable water delivery throughout the property or site.
Water Storage & Controls
Break tanks, treated-water storage, float switches, level controls, solenoids and automated control systems designed to manage water levels, pumping and system operation reliably.
UV Sterilisation & Final Filtration
Sediment filtration and UV disinfection as the final treatment stage, helping protect water quality before the water enters the property, storage tank or wider distribution system.

Buying or Selling a Property with a Private Water Supply?
Private water supplies can raise important questions during a property purchase or sale. Water quality, treatment equipment, pumps, storage and the condition of the existing system should all be understood before completion.
JN Environmental can inspect existing private water supply systems, review water analysis results and identify any obvious treatment, pumping or maintenance issues that may need attention.
For buyers, this can help avoid unexpected costs after purchase. For sellers and agents, it can provide clearer information about the condition and operation of the private water supply.
System Inspection • Water Analysis Review • Treatment Advice • Pump & Filtration Assessment
Why Choose JN Environmental?
Private water supplies need experienced engineers who understand the complete system — not just individual filters. JN Environmental combines water treatment, pumping and field engineering expertise with practical nationwide support.
