Questions about how private water supplies work, where the water comes from and the equipment commonly used.
What is a private water supply?
A private water supply is a water source that is not provided by a water company. It may come from a borehole, spring, well or other private source and can supply a single property or multiple users.
Where does a private water supply come from?
Private water supplies commonly come from boreholes, springs and wells, although some systems may also use surface water, storage tanks or a combination of different sources.
Is private water safe to drink?
It can be, but the water should be properly assessed and treated where required. Water quality can vary depending on the source, geology, weather conditions and the condition of the supply system.
What equipment does a private water supply need?
The equipment depends on the source and water quality. A system may include pumps, storage tanks, pressure vessels, filtration, water treatment, controls and UV disinfection.
Does a private water supply need maintenance?

What water quality problems can you treat?
We treat common private water supply problems including iron, manganese, low pH, turbidity, hardness, colour, tannins, bacteria, nitrate and other contaminants.
Do I need a water analysis before treatment is designed?
Usually, yes. A recent water analysis helps identify the contaminants present and allows the treatment system to be designed around the actual water quality.
Can you treat iron and manganese together?
Yes. Iron and manganese can often be treated within the same overall system, although the correct process depends on concentration, pH, flow and other water chemistry.
Can UV treat bacteria in private water supplies?
Yes. UV disinfection is effective when correctly sized and installed, but the water must be suitably filtered and clear before it reaches the UV unit.
Can you treat nitrate and arsenic?
Yes. Both can be treated using specialist processes such as selective media, ion exchange or reverse osmosis depending on the water analysis and site requirements.
Can you improve colour, tannins and cloudy water?
Yes. Colour, tannins and turbidity can often be reduced using specialist filtration, activated carbon, resin or other treatment selected around the cause of the problem.

Why is my blonde hair turning green?
Green staining on hair can be caused by copper being dissolved into acidic water. Low pH can make private water supplies corrosive and attack copper pipework and fittings.
Why do my copper pipes keep leaking?
Repeated pinhole leaks in copper pipework can be a sign of corrosive water, often linked to low pH or aggressive water chemistry within the private water supply.
Why do my filters keep blocking?
Filters that block frequently can indicate high sediment, turbidity, iron or manganese levels, or that the existing filtration system is undersized for the water quality and flow.
Why is my water orange or brown?
Orange or brown staining is commonly associated with iron in the water. It can affect sinks, toilets, pipework and treatment equipment throughout the property.
Why is my water black or leaving dark stains?
Black staining and dark deposits are often associated with manganese. It can build up in pipework, tanks and filters and may require specialist treatment.
Why does my water go cloudy after heavy rain?
Heavy rainfall can introduce sediment, organic matter and surface contamination into springs and shallow sources, increasing turbidity and changing the appearance of the water.

How often should a private water supply system be serviced?
Most systems should be serviced at least annually, although the correct interval depends on the water quality, treatment equipment, usage and condition of the system.
Can you service a system installed by another company?

Do you offer free site surveys?
