Frequently Asked Questions About Private Water Supplies

Frequently Asked Questions

Listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions relating to Private Water Supplies.

General Info & Problems

What is a Private Water Supply (PWS)?

Water supplied from any source other than from a public water utility company such as United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, ect is a private water supply.
Most of these supplies are situated in remote, rural parts of the country and can originate from a range of sources including; boreholes, natural springs, and watercourses.

If you need help identifying your water supply or just need some advice please contact our office.

Where does my Private Water Supply come from?

The most common sources of private water supplies are boreholes and spring or surface derived water. Other sources include wells, streams, lakes and lochs.

Will my Private Water Supply need maintenance?

Most private water supply systems will require some form of filtration for a clean and safe drinking water.

The majority of filtration systems require an annual service, with more involved treatment possibly needing attention 2,3 or 4 times per year.

The most basic of treatment is often a cartridge filter and UV steriliser.

Typical spring water systems may also have a pH corrector which will require the media topping up periodically.

Borehole water often suffers from higher mineral concentrations so requires filtration for iron, manganese, pH and possibly water softening.

JN Environmental can quote for servicing on existing systems (no matter who installed it) from photographs sent to us. Just send your name, address and photos of each part of the equipment to info@jnenvironmental.co.uk
Alternatively call 01706 823744 to arrange a site visit.

I have been drinking unfiltered water, what are the risks?

Drinking unfiltered water from a borehole or spring may cause nausea and diarrhoea, abdominal pain, an increased temperature, & headaches. More severe cases can lead to bloody diarrhoea, dehydration or even kidney failure.

High concentrations of iron in water can lead to hemochromatosis, which can lead to liver, heart and pancreatic damage, as well as diabetes. Early symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, and joint pain.

Long term exposure to high manganese levels can lead to a variety of psychiatric and motor disturbances, termed manganism.

My water has failed after testing by the council. What should I do?

Firstly, don’t panic. The council will give you sufficient time to implement any improvements. If the council have advised on any practices such as boiling the water for drinking or using bottled water you should do this.

We can discuss the failures and advise on the best course of action to remedy the failures. It may be that new equipment is required or that existing equipment requires servicing correctly.

We carry out free of charge site surveys throughout the UK. In some cases we can provide a competitive quote through pictures sent to us via email.

What is a UV?

UV Disinfection is the approved method for removing harmful bacteria from borehole or spring water.
The UV must be correctly sized for reliable bacteria sterilization and serviced at least annually to maintain a bacteria free water supply.
A UV requires a minimum of a pre filter to achieve an optimum transmission of light. A UV unit will not alter the taste of your water or remove any of its healthy minerals. We stock a wide range of UV's and associated spares.

Why has my hair has turned blue / green?

Many private water supplies suffer from acidic water with a pH of less than 7.0. This water will corrode copper pipe, causing leaks and blue/green staining of sanitary ware. The leached copper will also stain light coloured hair. A pH Correction unit will adjust the pH of your water to stop any further problems.

Why do we get leaks on our pipes and the hot water cylinder needs replacing regularly?

Many private water supplies suffer from acidic water with a pH of less than 7.0. This water will corrode copper pipe and equipment, causing leaks. A pH Correction unit will adjust the pH of your water to stop any further problems.

My water is discoloured after heavy rainfall. What causes this?

Tannins are a natural organic material that can be the by-products of nature’s fermentation process, be created as water passes through peaty soil and decaying vegetation. This can cause water to have a faint yellow to tea-like colour, and can cause yellow staining on fabrics, fixtures, china and laundry.

Tannins may give a tangy or tart aftertaste to water. They may also cause water to have a musty or earthy odour.

Tannins – also known as fulvic or humic acid – are more common in surface water supplies and shallow wells than in deep wells. Water in marshy, low-lying, or coastal areas is also more susceptible to tannins.

Tannins can be reduced with a tannin filter. A tannin filter uses a specially selected anion resin which has an affinity to tannins, and regenerates on salt (using the chloride) to remove the colour.

Why does my water leave orange / brown stains on my sink, bath and washing?

This problem is most likely due to the presence of iron in your water supply. More commonly in borehole water and usually alongside the presence of manganese. The iron can be dissolved in the water so appearing clear but once is contact with air the iron can precipitate from solution turning brown. This is often shown in animals water bowls.

An iron and manganese reduction filter can be used to overcome this problem.

I am buying a house with a Private Water Supply. Will I encounter problems?

Private Water Supplies are flagged up on an increasing number of property searches. This often isn’t a problem if filtration is in place and is regularly maintained. Unfiltered water or areas of risk may be highlighted by the council. This can lead to sales falling through - sometimes at a huge expense.

JN Environmental can conduct a home buyers survey for prospective buyers including laboratory water testing to advise on the water quality and filtration requirements.

I have moved into a new house with a filter system. Can you help?

Yes, we certainly can.

JN Environmental can quote for servicing and upgrades on existing systems (no matter who installed it) from photographs sent to us. Just send your name, address and photos of each part of the equipment to info@jnenvironmental.co.uk

Do JN Environmental drill boreholes?

No, but we work closely with the best borehole drillers in the country. We work only the best in the business to compliment our treatment systems - which are second to none.

Unlike our competitors, we don't claim to be a "one stop shop". We specialize only in what we do best - Private Water Supply Treatment.

We only drink bottled water. Why should we treat out Private Water Supply?

Using bottled water as the main drinking supply to the house can be very costly and generates lots of plastic waste.

Correctly filtered spring water will taste better than bottled water. In part this is due to spring water being well aerated and a low pH adds a natural sweetness to water.
It is important to remember that even though you may not use your Private Water Supply for consumption it could still have a negative effect on your plumbing and heating systems - for example; water with a low pH will attack any copper pipework and heating cylinders.

Why does my white washing keep turning orange?

This type of problem usually occurs on borehole supplies and is a clear indicator that the water contains high levels of iron or manganese.
The water entering the house may look perfectly clear, however, once air is introduced into the water the iron leaves behind an orange or brown stain.
Iron and manganese staining can cause unsightly staining on your white bathroom suite.

Cost & Pricing Queries

Why do you not charge for a site survey?

We offer a free of charge site survey to all prospective customers throughout the UK. The reason for this is that we need to fully understand all the different parameters involved in getting water to your taps. Water can be pumped or gravity fed to your house. The way this is done and the available flow and pressure has a huge impact on how successful any filter equipment will perform.

We can carry out an indicative water analysis whilst on site and if deemed necessary a full UKAS laboratory analysis can be conducted to establish the water mineral and bacteriological make up.

We strive to get the filtration correct first time and without this information it is impossible to give that assurance.

We have helped out many people who have tried other companies and resulted in much higher costs or wrongly specified equipment, poor installation and commissioning errors.

Once we have all the relevant information needed we can design and quote for the required filtration. You will get our best price, first time.

Our 5 star google reviews shows that you can trust in JN Environmental to get it right, first time.

What are the maintenance costs?

The cost of maintenance is dependent on the type of equipment installed. The more equipment installed, the longer servicing will take.

Depending on your location as a guide, a typical spring filter supply system (pH corrector, cartridge filter & UV) service by JN Environmental would be around £150-250 per year.

The cost of JN Environmental maintaining a typical borehole filter system (iron reduction, cartridge filter & UV) will cost around £200-300 a year.
